Upper Canada Village 2010
Event Overview
Yet again, Scallagrims rocked this event with their outgoing personality and positive spirit. We were given fair amount of land to setup both, Viking and Russ camps, as well as create an area for demonstration and practice of combat skills. During the event Scallagrims performed One-on-One combats and Mass battles, guarded entrance to Medieval Fair, worked with other event participants to entertain the audience, and of course fed and entertained everyone who stayed at the Upper Canada Village fairground overnight.
Presentations
During this year’s Medieval Festival, Scallagrims represented two cultures: Vikings, which we’ve been demonstrating since 2007 and our recent research – Kievan Russ. We also decided to revamp our way of presentation and broke it in segments so listeners do not get confused with large amount of information and would constantly interact with presenter. Throughout the entire event, we invited groups of people (5-10 individuals) and took them through three areas of the camp ground where they could learn about every represented culture and eventually experience what they learned in training area. At all-time there were max three groups in the camp; one per each area.
-
Area 1 – Russ
Group of visitors was taken inside of a large tent where various Russ weapons and armor was shown to them. Visitors had an opportunity to try on some pieces of armor as well as hold exact replicas of ancient weapons.
-
Area 2 – Vikings
In this area we had a variety of weapons and armor displayed in open, so anyone from the group could try to swing a sword or an ax and really feel their power. Viking “A” Frame tent was too small to bring entire group in, so we let visitors in one by one inside and take pictures while they were sitting on animal skins.
-
Area 3 – Training Ground
Eventually, after visitors tried on and held all armor and weapons, they could actually try it in action. Scallagrims provided quick training in using Spear, Ax and Sword.
Other Activities
Besides presentations, we had a great opportunity exchange medieval combat experience with other organizations such as SCA and AEMMA. All together we managed to put up great mass battle with about 30 participants.
Leisure Time
Entertainment did not stop even when the night fell. Every evening, at Scallagrims camp, many of those who stayed at Fair Ground came to our camp fire and fun continued. There was plenty of singing, dancing and laughing. Scallagrims and several other participants did an impressive fire-show with flaming poi and staff.
Yet, fun did not end there, but as it’s said: - What happened in Upper Canada; Stays in Upper Canada.
